Where we're up to with this year's roads maintenance programme

All 18 roads chosen for surface dressing as part of Wirral's 2023 roads maintenance programme have now undergone the first stage of treatment.

Surface dressing restores the road surface with layers of chippings and bitumen, and after some bedding in by traffic a seal will be applied to finish the treatment.

Roads are selected for the maintenance following independent condition surveys in addition to reports from highways inspectors, councillors and members of the public.

This annual programme aims to use a carefully considered prioritisation process to select the roads that are in the greatest need of repair within the limited funding available.

In total, more than 130 roads or road sections have been chosen for the 2023 maintenance programme, each receiving the most appropriate treatment type.

Treatments and materials used to repair the road are chosen for each road based on multiple criteria, including:

  • the existing road condition (for example, crack, pothole or full road surface)
  • the location and position of the road
  • the material or treatment that can provide the greatest sustainability to the current road

The full list of roads in this year's maintenance programme is available on the Wirral Council website.
