Merseyside Police Crime Commissioner, Emily Spurell talks about the importance of 20mph speed limits for safety of all road users and how it can help Merseyside meet the vision of zero collisions on our roads.

Last year, we launched the Vision Zero Liverpool City Region Strategy about how we can make our roads safer. One of the key things that we are trying to do [within this] is about reducing the speeds on our roads.

I really welcome the action being taken by Wirral Council to reduce roads to 20mph speed limits.

I recognise, of course, that Police enforcement is a big part of how we do this, and I will be holding the Chief Constable to account to make sure that we continue to enforce as much as possible, where people are breaking the speed limit.

But it's important that we recognise that the police cannot do this on their own and so working with local partners, working with our community through schemes like the Safer Roads Watch, this is how we can really empower to make a positive difference and reduce speeds within the community.
