Scottish Power will start cable works in Birkenhead and Prenton this month. The £3 million upgrade project, from SP Energy Networks, will start in April and will continue until late June to provide a better electricity distribution network.

The project will involve the removal of overhead lines to be replaced with underground cables – reinforcing electricity supplies for 98,000 homes and businesses connected to the network, as well as making sure the network is in good condition for the future.

The works, which will involve the installation of 1.2km of 132,000 volt underground cables, will start during the week of Monday 18 April until the week ending 26 June 2022.

During this time, the following road closures are planned to be in place:

  • Melford Drive: 18 – 22 April
  • Prenton Dell Road: 25 April – 13 May
  • Woodchurch Road (outer lane and centre lane closed): 14 – 15 May (weekend)
  • Woodchurch Road (both centre lanes closed): 16 May – 24 June
  • Woodchurch Road (centre lane and outer lane closed): 25 – 26 June (weekend)

Lane closures affecting Woodchurch Road are necessary to ensure the safety of the SP Energy Network project team as well as members of the public and road users.

Works have, and will continue to be, programmed to minimise disruption for residents, road users and pedestrians.

The project will also have a second phase at Prenton Dell Road for approximately three weeks.
