New 20mph speed limits signs are being installed across borough
The first phase of the introduction of 20mph speed limits across Wirral is continuing with roads in the Claughton and Oxton areas starting to see new signage and road markings in targeted areas.
Roads in Lower Heswall, Port Sunlight and West Kirby have been completed in the first few months of the introduction of the scheme, which brings in slower speed limits in areas that are predominantly residential or stretches of road that pass by shopping areas, schools or near hospitals.
In the first phase, 15 areas of the borough are getting new 20mph signs and accompanying markings on the road to alert drivers to the new speed limit. Over the next four years, the aim is to reduce speed limits across 52 areas of Wirral, subject to available funding and further public consultation.
The primary aim of the scheme is to slow down traffic in busier areas, making it safer and healthier for all road users and local people.
Introducing more 20mph speed limits in predominantly residential, retail, or educational areas is one of the priorities identified by Wirral’s Road Safety Working Group, made up of cross-party elected members.
Lowering speeds can help to make walking and cycling more attractive, helping to reduce traffic noise, lower levels of pollution and ultimately create a healthier population.

A list of all the roads included in the first phase is published on the Wirral Council website, having previously been made available for people to see as part of the consultation.
There are additional areas and roads earmarked for inclusion for phase two of the scheme, which will be published later this month as part of a new round of consultation.
Merseyside Police are responsible for enforcing speed limits across the Liverpool City Region.
