The Magazine Hotel in New Brighton is one of the first historic buildings proposed for Wirral's new Local List

Following the launch of Wirral’s Local List in January, the first 33 historic buildings, structures and landmarks are now registered for final consideration – and time is running out for people to put forward places of significance that they think should be considered for inclusion before nominations close on 30th April.

The full list can be viewed online here and now includes locally recognised buildings such as the former Central Hall in Hoylake, the Glegg Arms in Heswall, the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Bidston and Tranmere’s Deep Air Raid Shelter and the Magazine Hotel in New Brighton.

Being included on the Local List means that these buildings and landmarks will be given special consideration in future planning applications, helping to protect local sites that are of special significance but don’t meet the criteria for national Listing.

Wirral’s Heritage Champion, Councillor Jerry Williams, said:

It has been fantastic to see the breadth of nominations received for buildings and landmarks across all areas of the borough. It really highlights the impressive amount of culture and heritage we’re lucky enough to enjoy in Wirral and shows how important our natural and built heritage is to building a sense of place and community.

I’d encourage residents, as well as community and heritage groups, to keep coming forward with nominations ahead of the deadline on 30th April, helping us celebrate as many of our wonderful historic assets as possible. We’re thankful for the enthusiasm and support we’ve had from the community for this important endeavour.

The Local List Assessment Panel meet every two months to review applications, with the next meeting scheduled for 28th April.

After nominations close on 30th April, the Local List will be finalised, with Article 4 directions being drafted for each local listing which will prevent permitted development rights. This means that any alteration to the exterior of a building/landmark on the Local List which would change its appearance would need planning permission. Following this, public consultation will take place before the local list can be formally adopted.

How to nominate:

  • Register online at Welcome - The Local Heritage List for Wirral
  • Check the existing list before nominating to ensure that the asset you’re proposing isn’t already on the Local or National List (designated assets can be found on the website map). If it’s not already included, you can go ahead and nominate. If the asset you’d like to nominate is already included in the list as under review, you can submit extra documentation to strengthen the nomination
  • Review the selection criteria which outlines the types of submissions being looked for, as well as which elements of architectural and historic significance will be assessed
  • Gather your supporting information to assist your nomination, including the address, photographs, and any relevant background information about the building or structure
  • Submit your nomination via the website
