Planning Approved for New David Lloyd Club at Wirral Waters
Leading health, fitness and wellness group David Lloyd Clubs is set to push ahead with a new state-of-the-art club at Wirral Waters.
Planning permission was given by Wirral Council this week and the decision marks a significant milestone for the regeneration of one of the most ambitious projects being delivered by waterside regeneration specialists, Peel Waters.
Subject to final preparations, construction is expected to begin later this year.
The club will be located on the Bidston Dock site off Wallasey Bridge Road and paves the way for further investment into the local area. The facility is expected to create over 100 new jobs once operational, along with 60 jobs during the construction phase.
Among a range of facilities the new club will include:
- A state-of-the-art gym with Personal Training
- Heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools
- Kids indoor and outdoor swimming pools
- Match-quality tennis, padel, pickleball and badminton facilities
Located close to major transport links, including the M53, the Mersey Tunnel, and Birkenhead North train station, the new club will be easily accessible to people across the Wirral.
This project forms part of the wider vision for Wirral Waters - long-term regeneration transforming the area into a vibrant, mixed-use community with new homes, green public spaces and amenities, as well as places for businesses to grow.
Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, said:
This development is a clear vote of confidence in Wirral Waters and in the future of our borough. It will deliver jobs, support long-term growth, and accelerate inward investment. Projects like this demonstrate that Wirral is ambitious, competitive, and ready to lead the next phase of regeneration.
Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Wirral Waters at Peel Waters, said:
We’re delighted that Wirral Council has approved this application. The new David Lloyd Club will bring a nationally recognised, premium health and wellbeing brand to Wirral Waters - delivering not only fantastic new facilities, but also significant investment and jobs opportunities for the local community.”
This is also a major milestone in the creation of a new leisure-led, mixed-use destination in the Bidston Moss area. The addition of this facility will help transform the area into a vibrant hub for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Stuart Caswell, New Clubs Acquisition Director, David Lloyd Clubs, added:
We are delighted to be able to bring a new David Lloyd Club to Wirral. Its great news for the local community as, not only will it allow local residents to enjoy happier healthier lives, it will also create numerous jobs across a range of roles in the sports and hospitality sector.
