New plans for Birkenhead town centre - your chance to have your say
Attracting more people into Birkenhead town centre with improved leisure and residential opportunities alongside promoting new business uses and bringing in more shoppers are key elements of the plans for improving Birkenhead’s town centre.
In previous consultation people were asked to give their views on the opportunity for major transformation of Birkenhead Town Centre and the adjoining St Werburgh’s area.
This feedback has helped to develop a clearer vision for the area and the production of a draft Masterplan for the future of three key adjoining areas in the heart of Birkenhead including Grange Road retail area, the Commercial District (around new office buildings) and Charing Cross Quarter – which together are being collectively referred to here as Birkenhead Central.
The ambition is to bring greater visitor numbers with improved pedestrian and cycling routes anchored by wholesale changes including the proposed new market adjacent to the existing bus station and a new health and wellbeing facility.
The scale of the ambition is supported by the council’s strategic acquisition of the Pyramids estate in 2023 which presents a major opportunity for taking control and shaping the town’s future.
