Local Plan Update

Wirral’s Local Plan shows how the borough will protect its Green Belt from development and focus regeneration on brownfield sites.

This approach has cross party support and is already seeing rapid progress in delivering regeneration across the Left Bank area from New Ferry to New Brighton including Birkenhead and Wirral Waters.

The formal Examination in Public into the Local Plan will start on 18 April and follows a significant effort on the part of the council in consulting with the wider community. Further details are available on the Local Plan Examination process.

Around this time an appeal will also be heard on the council’s decision, to refuse eight planning applications for development in Wirral’s Greenbelt, by the applicant Leverhulme. The Government’s Planning Inspectorate has agreed that a public Inquiry will be held starting on the 16 May and could last up to two months.

Due to the significant amount of work that will have to be undertaken for these Planning Appeal Inquiries, the council has agreed with the Government’s Planning Inspectorate that the Local Plan Examination, which is expected to be underway at that point, will be paused until the Leverhulme appeal hearings have been completed.
