First wave of Millers Quay apartments reaches 80% occupancy
The striking Copper Mill and Steam Yard apartment blocks at waterside residential development, Millers Quay, have reached 80% capacity just ten weeks after completion.
With extensive views across the water, the first 150 highly sustainable one- and two-bedroom apartments within the £130m residential scheme at Wirral Waters have attracted a record number of enquiries and are expected to reach full capacity by Christmas.
Millers Quay is transforming the Left Bank of the River Mersey and, since the completion of Copper Mill and Steam Yard in July, letting agent JLL has received over 2,000 enquiries and 800 requests to view, largely from the local areas across Liverpool and Wirral.
New and potential residents have stated that the bold design of Millers Quay, the high level of sustainability, and the development’s waterside location as the most desirable factors which piqued their interest.
With the next 350 apartments, located within the final four blocks of Millers Quay - Soda Factory, Salt House, Glaze Works and Lime Studio, expected to complete early in 2025, the high number of enquiries and viewings is expected to continue into the New Year.
Cllr Paul Stuart, Leader of Wirral Council, said:
The Millers Quay development shows how this area, once a derelict and unused dockland site for many years, is already becoming an incredible and desirable place to live. These Millers Quay homes provide a unique waterfront location in Wirral combining a colourful new landmark on our skyline with sustainable and high-quality new homes and it’s great to see such strong interest coming so quickly from potential tenants.
This shows how the brownfield focus in Wirral’s aims for future development can be delivered, and how partnerships – as exemplified by the council and Peel, as well as all the others involved in delivering this project – are key to this as we look towards more developments underpinning our wider regeneration strategy for the borough.
With a total of 500 new homes across six buildings, Millers Quay is the single biggest development to date at Wirral Waters and is seen as an exemplar in brownfield regeneration. Millers Quay will also include 100 affordable new homes and has been commended for the social impact delivered within the local community.
Plans for a new Sainsbury’s Local store, located at Millers Quay, were submitted to Wirral Council last month. If approved, the purpose built, stand-alone store will be located on the corner of Dock Road and Duke Street, on the doorstep of Millers Quay and at the heart of the growing community at Wirral Waters.
Designed in collaboration with award-winning architects Howells, Millers Quay offers striking architecture, drawing inspiration from the vibrant colours, metalwork, and warehouses that defined the area's 19th Century industrial heritage.
These waterfront apartments also offer expansive views, south-facing shared spaces, dockside walkways, and access to new green spaces and micro parks, inviting residents to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying urban comforts.
Wirral Waters is part of Peel Waters, a UK wide portfolio of vibrant and innovative, waterfront developments, delivering large-scale, sustainable regeneration projects, creating jobs, economic growth, new homes and new public realm across the country.
Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Wirral Waters, said:
Ever since construction began at Millers Quay, it has attracted a great deal of interest, because there is nothing else like it on the Wirral. It’s fantastic to see such high levels of interest from the local area and to see residents moving in and this new community starting to grow.
We couldn’t have done this without the support and backing of Wirral Council, our funding partner Pension Insurance Corporation plc (“PIC”), construction firm GRAHAM, Wirral Met College, and Homes England, who have all been instrumental in the delivery of Millers Quay.
John Coddington, Head of Residential for JLL Property & Asset Management, said:
This rapid lease-up is testament to the quality of the development by Peel Waters as well as the hard work of our team and the successful lease-up strategy. We are looking forward to welcoming more residents to Millers Quay and releasing phase 2 shortly.
