Birkenhead made a Government ‘trailblazer’ neighbourhood
Birkenhead is one the Government’s 25 “trailblazer” areas set to receive millions of pounds for community-led regeneration.
The announcement was part of the Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Spending Review which outlines the Government’s plans for day-to-day spending and major capital investment over the coming years.
Birkenhead will be one of “trailblazer neighbourhoods” that will each receive up to £20 million over the next decade as part of a new fund launched at the Spending Review.
The new funds are for areas such as Birkenhead to lead the way in community-led regeneration and renewal. It will provide support to prepare for investment from a dedicated team and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) will work with partners from across the sector to support communities to drive forward the changes they want to see in their neighbourhoods.
The Government says this will support improvements people can see on their doorstep, champion local leadership, foster community engagement and strengthen social cohesion. MHCLG have said they will set out further details shortly.
The new funding will also support the Birkenhead 2040 Framework, a 20-year plan which sets out how to re-make Birkenhead with family-friendly neighbourhoods, re-connecting a revitalised town centre with the waterfront, and making the most of the town’s iconic heritage and buildings.
Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, said:
This is an incredibly welcome boost for Birkenhead as we move forward with our plans to bring about the much-needed and long overdue improvements and stimulate the local economy.
We are working with partners in local businesses and the community to drive this change forward and this additional funding will play a significant role in helping our efforts to make a real and positive difference to the town centre and surrounding areas and deliver for these communities.
