Discounted driving assessments help older motorists stay confident

Drive Safely for Long

Senior residents are benefiting from discounted driving assessments provided by Wirral Council, with many reporting increased confidence behind the wheel.

The Drive Safely for Longer assessment offers drivers aged over 60 a two-hour session with qualified driving instructors who have received additional nationally recognised road safety training.

Part-funded by the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership, which is made up of local authorities and emergency services, the assessment costs drivers just £20 - significantly less than the usual cost a driving instructor would charge.

Drivers can use the session to refresh their skills, address concerns or build confidence in specific driving situations, such as motorway driving, city centre routes or busy roundabouts. Some drivers have used the session to familiarise themselves with driving a new car.

They are designed to help people drive safely for longer. Participants are encouraged to  use their own vehicle but can drive the instructor's car if it would make them more comfortable.

With almost 300 discounted places available, older drivers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to refresh their skills and build confidence behind the wheel.

Many drivers have given glowing reviews of their experiences.

A very interesting and informative session, very good advice was given and I have taken onboard what was suggested to be a safer driver.

I have put into practice what I have learnt on my driving session and I feel more confident with my motorway driving now.

I was given guidance to follow in an understanding supportive way. A very pleasant experience overall.

A third commented

I felt at ease and the observation of my driving was done in a discrete fashion. I was glad to hear about the issues raised and I do feel more confident as a result.

Safer for Longer workshops

Wirral Council’s Road Safety Team also offer Safer for Longer workshops. They are designed to raise awareness of road safety issues for over 60s.

The workshop is delivered in an informal interactive format through discussion and sharing experiences. A road safety officer will provide information and advice to help keep people safer for longer whether they are walking, riding, travelling as a passenger or a driver.

They provide information on eyesight, medication, lifestyle, mobility, driving assessments and public transport.

If you are part of a community group and you think your group will benefit from a workshop, sessions can come to you.

If you are an individual, officers will try to fit you into an existing group session.
