People who live, work in or visit Oxton Village are being encouraged to share their views as part of an important project to help protect and enhance one of Wirral's most distinctive historic areas.

Work is underway on behalf of Wirral Council and The Oxton Society to produce a new Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for Oxton Village Conservation Area.

This project will identify the area's special qualities, opportunities for enhancement and priorities for future management, helping to ensure Oxton's unique character is protected for generations to come.

Oxton Village Conservation Area has a distinct identity, shaped by its origins as an early agricultural settlement before developing into an affluent Victorian suburb. The area contains a rich collection of listed buildings and buildings of local significance and remains a vibrant and thriving community at the heart of East Wirral.

The conservation area was first designated in 1979 and since then there has been growing recognition of the importance of heritage and place, however, gradual changes to buildings, streets and public spaces have affected the character of the conservation area.

Community involvement is central to the development of the new appraisal and management plan. By gathering the views of local residents, businesses and visitors, the project team hopes to better understand what people value most about Oxton, the challenges facing the area and opportunities for improvement.

The feedback will help build a clearer picture of the buildings, landscapes and people that have shaped this remarkable historic environment, while ensuring future decisions reflect the priorities of the community.

Councillor Mark Skillicorn, Chair of Wirral Council's Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee, said:

Oxton Village is one of Wirral's most treasured historic places, with a unique character shaped by generations of residents, businesses and community groups. As we develop a new Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan, it is vital that the people who know and care about Oxton have the opportunity to share their views.

Conservation is not simply about protecting historic buildings. It is about understanding what makes a place special, strengthening local identity and ensuring our heritage continues to contribute to the wellbeing of current and future generations. I would encourage everyone with a connection to Oxton, whether you live, work or spend time there, to complete the survey and help shape the future of this remarkable conservation area.

How to get involved:

Everyone with an interest in Oxton Village is invited to complete the online survey and share their ideas and opinions.

The survey seeks views on what makes Oxton special, what should be protected and enhanced, and how the conservation area can continue to evolve while retaining its historic character.

When completing the survey, participants should note that their details, such as name and email address, will not be collected automatically unless they choose to provide them.

The views gathered will play an important role in shaping the future Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan and helping to safeguard the character and heritage of Oxton Village for years to come.

The survey, which will remain open until August 31, can be completed at Oxton Village CAAMP.
