Special library takeover coming to Birkenhead Park
Families can combine reading with the great outdoors during the summer holidays when Wirral Libraries visits one of the borough’s most treasured green spaces.
As part of Love Parks Week, there will be a special event at Birkenhead Park on Saturday 1 August.
Between 10am and 3.30pm, staff will host a pop-up library where visitors can browse books to enjoy beneath the shade of the park’s diverse collection of trees or beside the lake. Children can sign-up and take books home
The event will also give children the opportunity to sign up for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Read to the Beat, which celebrates the connection between stories, music and creativity.
Throughout the day, a range of free activities will be available for different age groups that can be booked here:
- 10am – 10.30am: Baby Bounce and Rhyme (under 2s, siblings welcome)
- 11am – 12pm: Nature-themed Sensory Storytelling – full to capacity
- 1pm – 2pm: Den Building with Stories and Crafts - full to capacity
- 2.30pm – 3.30pm: Den Building with Stories and Crafts – full to capacity
This is a fantastic opportunity for families to enjoy two of Wirral’s greatest assets in one special event.
Our libraries offer a huge range of activities throughout the year that inspire children to read, learn and be creative.
Taking some of those into Birkenhead Park during the summer holidays is a wonderful way to reach even more families.
We have been enjoying a spell of beautiful weather. We encourage you to go to Birkenhead Park and read a book, hopefully in the sunshine!
We have an outreach programme over the summer and this event ties in really nicely.
We will have our new pop-up library on display for children to read and take home books, while we will be spreading the word about all of the activities that are on offer for children and adults in libraries across Wirral throughout the year.
About Love Parks Week
Love Parks Week runs from Friday 24 July to Sunday 2 August. Organised by Keep Britain Tidy, the annual campaign sees park managers, rangers and ‘Friends of’ volunteer groups host a wide range of events designed to celebrate local green spaces and encourage communities to enjoy them.
Across Wirral, residents can take part in activities that promote healthier lifestyles, community spirit and appreciation of the natural environment.
This year’s programme includes a record number of events such as a sunset walk to Hilbre Island, a teddy bears’ treasure hunt, a sandcastle building competition and wildlife spotting sessions.
