Wirral council leaders have set out how they plan to turn the page for the authority with the new Wirral Plan.
The Wirral Plan 2027 to 2031: A New Chapter for Wirral outlines how the authority will focus on core priorities as well as the challenging financial position for local government.
The new Wirral Plan will help to guide how the council can ensure its finances are put on a more sustainable basis as costs rise and demand for services such as social care increases.
The Plan focuses on:
- Efficiently delivering good, reliable services that benefit everyone.
- Helping local people feel more connected to their community and better able to deal with challenges.
- Providing support earlier for those in need to prevent problems from getting worse.
- Developing community hubs offering a mix of public and voluntary, community and faith sectors to enable people to access services easier.
- Growing the local economy and the creation more good-quality jobs for Wirral residents.
Leader of Wirral Council, Councillor Paula Basnett, said:
This plan is about focusing on what matters most to our residents.
People have told us they want reliable services, support that is easier to access, thriving communities and more opportunities for themselves and their families. This plan sets out how we intend to deliver that.
We know many residents are facing challenges and we are not pretending there are easy answers. But we are committed to doing things differently, listening more, working more closely with communities and partners, and making sure support is available earlier and closer to home.
Whether it's cleaner neighbourhoods, quicker access to help, stronger local communities or better job opportunities, our ambition is simple: to help people live well and ensure Wirral continues to thrive.
This is a new chapter for Wirral, and we want residents to be part of that journey.
The new Wirral Plan was developed following Local Government Association (LGA) Corporate Peer Challenge which is a supportive "health check" for a council to identify what is working well and what could be improved.
This independent review of Wirral Council was carried out by experienced councillors and senior officers from other local authorities via the LGA.
The Wirral Plan 2027 to 2031: A New Chapter for Wirral aligns with the council’s Medium-Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) which brings together all known factors affecting the council’s financial position and its financial sustainability into one place and highlights the budget challenges that will need to be addressed by the council over the coming financial years.
The Plan was approved by members of the council’s Policy and Resources Committee at the meeting on Wednesday July 22 and recommend it for approval by council.
