Read to the Beat in this year's Summer Reading Challenge
Children across Wirral have the chance to win special prizes by taking part in the biggest reading adventure of the year.
The Summer Reading Challenge launches tomorrow (4 July), with a Super Sign-Up Saturday taking place at Wirral Libraries.
Children aged 4-11 and their families are invited to enjoy a summer filled with books, music, creativity and imagination. The challenge runs throughout the school holidays until Saturday 5 September.
This year's theme Read to the Beat! will see libraries transformed into vibrant spaces celebrating music, creativity and storytelling.
To complete the challenge, children must read at least six books over three visits to the library. As they progress, they can collect stickers, bookmarks and badges.
A new digital rewards platform will also allow children to track their progress and unlock achievements along the way.
Every child who takes part will receive a certificate. Those who complete the challenge will be awarded a Read to the Beat! medal and entered in a prize draw to win:
- A Chromebook laptop (five available)
- A family ticket to the Floral Pavilion's 2026 pantomime
- A three-month family Invigor8 membership, courtesy of Active Wirral
The Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to inspire a love of reading while encouraging children to explore music and creativity.
Wirral Libraries always receive a fantastic response and this year's theme promises to make the challenge even more exciting. It will be wonderful to see our libraries transformed into lively spaces where young people can discover new stories and experiences.
Whether you're already a keen reader or just starting your reading journey, the challenge is a fun way to discover new books and create lasting memories during the summer holidays.
The Summer Reading Challenge is run nationally by The Reading Agency and this year is being delivered in partnership with Universal Music Group UK.
We're delighted to partner with Universal Music Group UK for our 2026 Challenge. Music has the incredible ability to break down barriers and engage children who might otherwise be reluctant readers.
This partnership will help us reach even more young people and show them that stories and songs share the same power to transport, inspire and transform. Everything really does change when you read.
Alongside the Summer Reading Challenge, Wirral Libraries will host a packed programme of activities throughout the school holidays, including music and poetry workshops, storytelling sessions and craft activities.
