Armed Forces Week 2026 flag raise at Wallasey Town Hall

Wirral has marked Armed Forces Week (22-28 June) by raising the Armed Forces flag at Wallasey Town Hall.

The Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Mary Jordan, and Matthew Bennett, Chief Executive of Wirral Council, joined representatives from the Royal Navy Association Wallasey, Royal British Legion and Army Reserves at the ceremony.

Afterwards, they were welcomed into the Mayor’s Parlour, along with members of the Armed Forces & Cadets Staff Network Group from Wirral Council.

It was a privilege to be at the event to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.

The Armed Forces community makes an extraordinary contribution to Wirral and our country. It is only right that we continue to stand firmly behind them.

I would like to express my recognition and gratitude for those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces for keeping us all of us safe and secure.

Wirral Mayor, Cllr Mary Jordan

The flag-raising ceremony highlights Wirral Council’s ongoing recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces.

Wirral Council is recognised as exceptional by the Ministry of Defence after being granted a Silver Award under its Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.

It is really good to see that Wirral Council is celebrating Armed Forces Week with the opening ceremony.

Armed Forces Week is very important to a lot of people. It is a link between society and the Armed Forces.

When we all come together, there is real camaraderie. Even though there is a friendly rivalry between the between the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force, all that goes aside. It is a camaraderie that you won’t get anywhere else.

Kevin Cosgrove, Royal Navy Association Wallasey Chair

Armed Forces Week provides an opportunity to recognise the men and women who keep the UK secure at home and strong abroad. It commends serving personnel, reservists, veterans or cadet force adult volunteers who keep the United Kingdom safe and the sacrifices they make.

Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 27 June, with Reserves Day marked on Wednesday 24 June. For more information, click here.
