Meet Naz, a business owner making a big difference in Wirral

Nazma Miah is just one of the many Wirral business owners making a big difference to their local communities.

The entrepreneur runs several successful businesses in Wirral, including Olawa Bakery in Liscard. When the shop next door became available, Naz saw an opportunity to give back to the community she loves.

Naz said: “We’ve knocked through, to create Olawa Lounge next door. We have big plans for the place, including setting up a non-profit group, where people can meet up, have a nice meal and socialise. We’ll have games, quizzes and just general chit-chat. There will also be cookery and baking lessons, slimming support, afternoon teas and even space for birthday parties.”

Born in Sylhet, Bangladesh, Naz moved to Chester when she was three where her father ran a restaurant. She moved to Bromborough aged 26 to be closer to work and made roots in Wirral, a place she would come to call home.

Seven years ago Naz opened Elachi Indian Restaurant in Wallasey, which last year won ‘Best Independent Hospitality Business’ at Liscard High Street Business Awards, an award voted for by members of the public. Naz clearly has a passion for keeping Wirral residents well fed, as she then opened El Mercado, a Latin American restaurant in Upton, and a chance visit saw her open Olawa Bakery in Liscard.

Naz said: “One day we came in to buy a fridge, got interested in the business and ended up buying it!

“The thing I like about running a shop in Wirral the people are really nice, friendly and down to earth. Most people chat to you, whether it’s in the shop or in the street. I like the way the community just comes together. There are a lot of different groups, there are a lot of things going on and a friendly atmosphere.

“I’m looking at bringing new things into Liscard, more choices and new experiences. It’s a lot of work but I’m grateful to be able to work with my husband and daughter, it’s a real team effort. My staff are great too. I employ local people and offer training and work experience.”

Currently Naz’s businesses in Liscard, Upton and Wallasey employ 20 people, with plans to employ another six people in the near future.

Businesses like Naz’s are at the heart of Wirral’s communities. As well as offering a warm welcome, friendly service and local expertise, they play a vital role in the local economy. Supporting businesses in our communities helps them flourish, which in turn helps creates more jobs locally. 

Naz said: “Small local businesses employ local people, they buy from local businesses and use local tradesmen. Local businesses have the interest of their community at heart and without them we wouldn’t survive.

“Supporting the community means growth for everyone.”
