The pool will reopen with a brand new ceiling next month.

Following a schedule of repair and improvement works West Kirby Concourse swimming pool is set to reopen in June 2025.

The pool was closed in March 2025 following reports of debris which included small pieces of ceiling tile falling directly into the pool area. After the initial closure, a visual inspection identified several additional areas of concern which resulted in the pool being drained and a large amount of scaffolding erected to help carry out proper safety checks.

Once the inspection had been carried out, a full works schedule and plan to reopen the pool was implemented and is well underway.

Works that have been completed so far:

  • Draining of the pool to complete inspection
  • Large amount of scaffolding erected
  • Safety checks carried out
  • Removal of existing suspended ceiling tiles and frame
  • Removal of redundant light fittings
  • Installation of brand new ceiling, in line with current safety regulations
  • Cleaning of ventilation ductwork and vents
  • Removal of scaffolding

Works that will be completed before reopening:

  • Deep clean of pool and poolside areas
  • Repairs to poolside lockers
  • Repairs to pool plant equipment
  • Refilling of the pool and full testing of pool water, ready for customers to return to safe bathing conditions

Pictures taken during the essential works show the scale of the scaffolding required to carry out the improvements.

Jason Gooding, Director of Neighbourhood Services for Wirral Council, said:

We know residents and visitors to West Kirby leisure centre will have been disappointed to not be able to use the pool facilities in recent weeks and I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused. But customer safety comes first.

Any tradesperson or DIY-er will tell you, when you start one job, you often uncover other issues that need ironing out or addressing.

While inspecting the original ceiling tile issue, our teams have taken this opportunity to check the rest of the ceiling, as well as the ventilation and other systems within the pool area. Thanks to these checks, a scheme of repair and improvement works have been undertaken and will ensure the pool area meets health and safety standards.

I’d like to thank pool users and clubs for their patience during this unavoidable closure – as well as our teams for their efforts to reopen the pool as soon as possible. We look forward to welcoming customers back to the pool once the final works have been completed.

The pool is set to reopen in June, with an exact date to be revealed soon.
