The works will include the installation of new high-grade all-weather turf.

An artificial grass pitch in Bidston will soon receive £200,000 development works to improve the facility.

The works, which will take place at Bidston Sports and Activity Centre, include the removal of old materials and the installation of brand new turf.

The improvements are required to bring the pitch back up to playing condition, following 15 years of constant use.

Cllr Ian Lewis, Chair of Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure Committee, said:

The artificial grass pitch at Bidston Sports and Activity Centre has been well used by residents, clubs and community groups from across Wirral for many years.

It’s no surprise that it’s time to bring it back up to standard. I’m sure the pitch’s many users will see the benefit of this £200,000 investment once the works have been completed and the pitch reopened.

The updates will begin on 1 October 2025, and be carried out by experienced supplier Global Maintenance LTD, who have extensive experience in the development of artificial turf, completing numerous projects at Manchester City and Sheffield Wednesday football facilities.

The project will take a number of weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions, and will include the following actions:

  • removal of the current pitch turf and installation of new high-grade all-weather turf
  • repairs to fencing and maintenance
  • repairs to outdoor changing facilities

While these works take place, the site’s security will also be improved with the addition of anti-climb fencing and other deterrents to help make further savings relating to anti-social behaviour.

The pitch will be closed from Wednesday 1 October.

Customers and bookings are being informed and reallocated pitches where possible.

Alternative pitches can be booked on a casual basis at Woodchurch Community Football Hub, Bidston, Oval, Leasowe and Guinea Gap Leisure Centres. Book online via https://activewirral.com/footballpitches/ or by telephone on 0151 606 2010.

The works will be funded using previously gained capital funding.
