Volunteers recognised for their outstanding care for stray dogs
The incredible, compassionate work carried out by the staff and volunteers at Birkenhead Kennels has received national recognition with the announcement of a Platinum award for ‘Stray Dog Services’ from the RSPCA.
In announcing their ‘Pawprints’ award winners this year, the animal charity said it was ‘testament to your commitment to effective care of stray dogs and promotion of responsible ownership within your community’.
Platinum is the highest level of award in the various categories of the Pawprints awards and the Stray Dog Services category recognises those who go above and beyond in providing essential services for stray dogs, ensuring their safety, care, and eventual rehoming.
The day-to-day operation of the kennels and stray dog service in Wirral has been contracted to the Friends of Birkenhead Kennels (FOBK) for the last 10 years.
They receive amazing support from Wirral residents with donations and fundraising activities that enable them to provide costly equipment, vital veterinary care, improvements to the kennels and to promote the rehoming programme, connecting pets in need of a home with people and families looking for their forever friend.
It is really humbling to see the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers at the kennels recognised in this way. They make such a difference, taking in animals that for whatever reason no longer have a home – some of whom have been subject to horrific mistreatment – and then caring for them diligently until they are able to be safely rehomed.
I’d like to thank them on behalf of the council and the community for the work they do and congratulate them on their honour.
The team received their award at the Pawprints annual gala awards ceremony on November 8th 2024.
