Views sought on changes to improve busy crossroads
Just over a year since changes were made to the busy Spital Crossroads junction, details have been released on proposals to further improve this area for all road users.
Last year’s changes - to install new software at the junction, reconfigure the lights and remove the need for vehicles turning right from Church Road and Poulton Road to give way to oncoming traffic - have proved successful.
Now, traffic engineers in Wirral are showing road users the design plan for the junction that will improve the pedestrian crossing areas at the junction and ensure they comply with current standards. The planned improvements will also see traffic signal equipment upgraded and some minor adjustments made to the traffic islands and lane layouts.
The design is still subject to some further site investigation works taking place but details are being shared now to give people the opportunity to comment on the scheme, which will be funded from the City Region Sustainable Transport Programme for 2026-27.
The Spital crossroads – where Church Road, Poulton Road, Brimstage Road and Spital Road meet near the Three Stags pub – has seen a number of serious road traffic collisions in recent years and relatives of people who have been killed or injured in these collisions have led a campaign for the junction to be made safer.
Last year’s measures were introduced while a more complicated re-design of the junction could take place and it is that re-design that is now being put forward for stakeholder and resident views.
