New cleaning team hits the streets
Residents of Woodchurch, Beechwood and north Birkenhead may have noticed more high-profile street cleaning going on in their area over the past two weeks.
That’s because Wirral Council and their waste contractor, Biffa, have invested in staff and equipment to put more manual cleansing of pavements in place in those areas since 5th May 2026.
The new workers, pushing their distinctive barrow along the streets, have been deployed to Woodchurch, Beechwood and parts of north Birkenhead in the first instance in an effort to tackle particular hotspots of litter in those areas.
Litter is an issue which, as councillors, we all receive a lot of feedback on from residents. While it is down to people themselves to take responsibility for binning their waste appropriately, some litter is inevitable and it is the council’s job to ensure our streets are as clean as possible.
The investment we have made in increasing the number of manual street cleaning operatives will help us give attention to areas most affected, but will also provide a visual demonstration as they walk the streets picking up rubbish that it is an issue that as a council we take very seriously. They are doing an important job on behalf of all of us so if you see them out and about make sure you say hello and show your support.
