Bikes being checked over by professionals

Following our free bike servicing event with partner Energise Cycles, we share some top tips on how to look after your bike – so that even if you couldn’t attend the event, you can still benefit from some advice.

Riding a bike – whether to work or school or for leisure can be a great way to get out and enjoy the local area but it is also a better way to travel both for your health and the local environment.

For this guest blog we’re handing the reigns - or should we say handlebars - to Hollie, a local Bike Mechanic, at our partners Energise Cycles CIC.

As an avid cyclist and your local female bike mechanic, I [Hollie] know first hand how invigorating a ride can be for both your body and mind. However, life sometimes throws curveballs—whether it’s unpredictable weather or a busy work schedule—that might delay your ride. Here’s a friendly reminder to get out there today! Even a short ride can make a significant difference.

Before you head out, it’s crucial to ensure your bike is in top condition. Here’s a straightforward checklist to follow, to make sure your bike is both safe and ready to perform at its best.

Check Your Rear Tyre

Give your rear tyre a firm squeeze. It should feel as solid as an apple, not soft like an orange.

While squeezing, check the wheel for stability by giving it a side-to-side wobble. There should be minimal movement and the wheel should be fastened properly.

Inspect the Spokes

Run your hands around the spokes on both sides of the wheel. Look for any loose spokes and squeeze pairs together to ensure proper tension.

Examine the Seat and Seat Tube

Wiggle the seat and seat tube to confirm they are securely fastened.

Assess the Crank Arms and Pedals

Check the crank arms by holding both at the same time and wiggling them up and down to detect any play in the frame. Ensure the pedals are firmly attached.

Review the Handlebars and Brakes

Make sure your brakes are stopping the wheel effectively and check the handlebars have end caps—they are essential for your safety.

Inspect the Front Wheel

Repeat the checks you did for the rear wheel: squeeze the tyre, wobble the wheel, and feel the spokes.

By following this checklist, you can ensure your bike is ready for any adventure. These checks are quick and will help you maintain a safe ride every time. If you notice any issues or if something doesn’t seem right, don’t hesitate to visit your local bike shop for professional advice.

Always carry a spare inner tube and pump. Bringing along a snack, drink, raincoat, and a few essential tools can make your ride more enjoyable and trouble-free—especially if you know how to use them!
