Free bike checks and road safety advice on World Car Free Day

Wirral residents can get a free bike safety check from qualified mechanics.

The event, organised by Wirral Council’s Road Safety Team, will take place at Conway Park Station in Birkenhead on Tuesday 22 September from 10am to 2pm. 

Those who attend can get all parts of their bike inspected, including wheels, brakes, gears, tyre pressure, lights, racks, pedals and saddles. Mechanics will carry out any minor repairs needed and make sure bikes are safe and ready to ride. 

If more substantial work is required, mechanics will provide advice on the next steps to get the bike roadworthy. 

Cyclists will also be able to get advice from the Road Safety Team. They will be available to provide guidance on cycling safely, local cycling routes and the network of cycle paths across the borough.  

Although bookings are full, there are a small number of spaces available on a first come, first served basis for people who attend the event. Bookings are currently full but may become available if there are any cancellations.  

The event coincides with World Car Free Day, an annual campaign that encourages people to leave their cars at home and consider alternative ways to travel.  

It aims to highlight the benefits of walking, wheeling and cycling, while helping to reduce traffic and improve air quality and create healthier lifestyles. 

Residents can also get active by taking part in the This City Moves Challenge and explore routes throughout Wirral.  

Through the Go Jauntly mobile app and in partnership with Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, it is a free six-week challenge that brings together residents from across the Liverpool City Region and Birmingham in a friendly competition to see who can record the most steps. 

The challenge takes places until Sunday 18 October.
