Time is fast running out for residents to book a place on one of the events taking place the weekend after next as part of the City Nature Challenge.

Beginning in West Kirby on Friday 25th April, to the last one in Wirral Country Park on Monday 28th, there are eight events scheduled over the weekend in Wirral where people are invited to take a stroll and discover the natural world that surrounds them.

The Wirral events are part of the Liverpool City Region contribution to the global challenge to observe, photograph and catalogue the native nature and wildlife over the course of one weekend.

No previous experience is needed to take part, everyone is welcome - all that is needed is a working, charged smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed. Anything else will be explained by the trained guides leading each walk.

The eight walks are scheduled as follows:-

  • Friday 25th April, 10.30am-11.30am – Gilroy Nature Park, West Kirby
  • Saturday 26th April, 10.30am-noon – Prenton Dell Claypit
  • Saturday 26th April, 10.30am-12.30pm – Thurstaston Common Local Nature Reserve

City Nature Challenge training

Earlier in the year, community organisations and partners from across Wirral gathered at Birkenhead Park for training with Merseyside Biobank to learn how to run these sessions and collect valuable nature data.

People from the Wirral Environment Network, Wirral Wildlife Trust, Prenton Dell Play Pits, Countryside volunteers, Friends of Dibbinsdale, Rangers from Birkenhead Park, Eco Schools, Wirral’s Climate Emergency Team and the Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee were all represented at the training.
