Leader's Blog: Creating opportunities together
When I look back on September, one theme stands out above all else: the power of partnership.
Across Wirral, organisations, businesses, community groups and residents are coming together with a shared ambition, to create opportunities, improve lives and build a stronger future for our borough. While individual projects may look different, they are all part of a bigger story about what we can achieve when we work together around common goals.
One of the most significant developments this month has been the creation of Wirral's new Place Partnership Board. Bringing together leaders from the public, private, voluntary and community sectors, the board provides a new way of working together to champion Wirral, attract investment, unlock opportunities and tackle challenges collectively.
No single organisation can deliver the changes we want to see on its own. By aligning our ambitions, sharing expertise and focusing on what matters most to residents, we can achieve far more together than we can individually. The Place Partnership reflects a shared commitment to creating opportunity, supporting growth and ensuring that the benefits of investment are felt across every part of the borough.
That spirit of collaboration is already making a difference.
Earlier this month, more than 300 residents attended the latest Wirral Jobs Fair, bringing together employers, training providers and jobseekers under one roof. Since the programme began, almost 5,000 residents have attended jobs fairs across the borough, connecting with hundreds of employers and organisations offering careers advice, training, apprenticeships and employment opportunities. These events are a great example of partners working together to help people access the support and opportunities they need to build successful futures.
Supporting young people remains equally important. Through the Youth Guarantee programme, local partners are working together to ensure young people can access advice, skills, training and employment opportunities. Every young person should have the chance to fulfil their potential, and partnership working is helping turn that ambition into reality.
September also brought welcome news for Wirral's economy. The official opening of Finsa's new £20 million logistics headquarters in Wirral Waters is another vote of confidence in the borough and our future. Investment like this creates jobs, supports local businesses and strengthens Wirral's reputation as a place where companies can invest, grow and succeed.
Partnership working is helping improve quality of life too. Health partners continue to work alongside local organisations and communities to support healthier lifestyles and improve wellbeing, while encouraging new figures showing a significant reduction in youth reoffending demonstrate the positive impact that can be achieved when services work together around a shared objective.
Our shared commitment to place is also helping shape the future of Wirral's towns and neighbourhoods. Plans to enhance Liscard town centre continue to move forward, while a headline-grabbing ceremony marked another important milestone in the launch of Wirral's new Mersey Ferry. Together, these projects help strengthen local pride, improve connections and create places where people want to live, work, invest and visit.
Taken individually, each of these stories is positive. Taken together, they tell us something even more important. Across Wirral, there is growing momentum. Partners are coming together around a shared vision for the future and turning that vision into action.
For me, that is the defining message from September. By working together, we can create more opportunities for residents, attract investment, support businesses, improve communities and deliver lasting change. The new Place Partnership provides an important foundation for that work, bringing together the collective leadership, ambition and determination needed to help Wirral realise its full potential.
