Partners took to the streets during ASB Awareness Week
Community safety partners across Wirral, including officers from the police, council and social landlords, came together last week to help raise awareness of anti-social behaviour (ASB) – how it affects communities, how people can report it and what collectively can be done to tackle it.
ASB Awareness Week is a national campaign bringing together housing, policing, local government, charities, community partners and more to shine a spotlight on the issue, strengthen local responses and highlight the rights of victims.
Events took place on each weekday last week, covering a number of areas of the borough.
Monday – Birkenhead
The week began with a day of action in Birkenhead town centre involving Wirral Council’s community safety team, police officers and representatives from Magenta Living, Riverside Housing, One Vision Housing and Regenda Homes. While they were present, officers spoke to around 50 passersby to hear their experiences of crime and anti-social behaviour in the area. On a number of occasions, people passed on information and intelligence on ongoing criminal activities which have been passed onto the police to follow up.
Tuesday - Moreton
Tuesday saw attention turn to the Orchard Road area or Moreton. A walkabout in the area was aimed at providing community reassurance following recent complaints of anti-social behaviour in the area. Officers from the police, Magenta Living and Wirral Anti-Social Behaviour Team completed a comprehensive letter drop of the area and spoke to more than 20 residents on their doorstep.
Wednesday - Woodchurch
Partners from Magenta Living, Regenda Homes and Wirral Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Team held street surgeries on Hoole Road and Eltham Green, Woodchurch, supported by local elected members and the council’s Environmental Enforcement Team.
The aim of this surgery was to encourage the reporting of anti-social behaviour and provide community reassurance in the area. Officers knocked on more than 60 doors in the area to speak to residents directly, while leaflets were posted to other properties or given out on the street.
Thursday – Noctorum
Partners from Magenta Living and Wirral Anti-Social Behaviour Team held a street surgery on Noctorum Avenue, Wirral, again supported by councillors for the area and Environmental Enforcement officers. Officers visited 12 shops to give advice on reporting anti-social behaviour on or near their premises. In addition, officers posted leaflets and letters to 72 residential properties.
Friday - Beechwood
There was more of the same on Friday as partners from Regenda and the anti-social behaviour team held a street surgery on Fender Way. Shops and residential properties were visited or leafleted and members of the public provided a great deal of information and intelligence relating to anti-social behaviour which will be followed up by partners.
Other events and walkabouts took place in other locations too and throughout the week, residents were reminded that reporting anti-social behaviour is the first and most important step in getting something done about it.
