Mayor’s Charity Fund raises a record-breaking £60,000 for local good causes
Fundraising efforts by Wirral’s former Mayor, Councillor Cherry Povall JP, have generated more than £60,000 for local good causes
Nineteen local charities and groups will benefit from the record-breaking amount raised by Councillor Povall and her consort, former Mayoress Sheila Clarke MBE, along with a small group of volunteers from the Mayor’s charity committee.
Councillor Povall, who was Civic Mayor until May of this year, handed over a record £60,332 to representatives of local groups at a special reception in Wallasey town hall on Wednesday evening (9 July).
The funds were raised through a wide range of activities and events, including Christmas and VE Day tea dances, lunch and book signing with former royal butler Paul Burrell, Burns Night supper, Western-style Hoe Down, Golf Day with Condy Lofthouse architects, and from the Council staff payroll lottery. Numerous donations were also made by individuals and companies throughout the year.
Councillor Cherry Povall said:
So many people were incredibly kind and generous in helping us to raise such a fantastic amount for local causes. We couldn’t have done it without every single raffle ticket bought, prize donated, or event attended, so I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who helped us throughout the year.
I am so proud of what everyone has achieved, and the record-amount is the icing on the cake to a wonderful year as Mayor.
Councillor Povall chose Incubabies (the neonatal unit at Wirral Women and Children’s Hospital) and UK North Blind Sailing Association, as the main beneficiaries of the Charity Fund, while agreeing to support a number of other good causes with smaller amounts.
