Residents and communities will soon benefit from a 102-apartment, affordable rent, Extra Care development in Rock Ferry, Birkenhead.

Work is ongoing on Spinnaker House which is due for completion later this year. Offering residents aged 55 and over their own high quality, self-contained apartment, the £13.64m facility is a key development in the council's plans to shift away from nursing homes towards supported community-based living.

The development of Extra Care Housing across the borough is a priority for the Wirral Plan 2023-27 and the Wirral Housing Strategy. This type of housing gives local people the ability to stay independent for as long as possible, thanks to on-site care that’s flexible to individual needs. Extra care facilities give people greater choice over the care they receive.

Graham Hodkinson, Director of Adults, Health and Strategic Commissioning for Wirral Council, said:

We want to support people to live independently and in their own homes for as long as possible.

Sites like this latest development, Spinnaker House, give local people freedom and independence with access to support as and when they need it. Once the building works are finished, it will be another modern facility and fantastic asset for Wirral communities.

Spinnaker House offers modern apartments that have been specifically designed to provide a comfortable and safe environment for people with mobility issues.

Built on the former Rock Ferry High School site, off Highfield Road South, the development will house an on-site cafe and salon, run by local businesses, which will be available for the wider community to enjoy too.

The scheme also has exclusive shared facilities for residents, including a guest suite for family members to stay over at affordable rates, spacious communal and social areas, lifts to all floors, laundry room, communal gardens and more.

Spinnaker House has been developed by affordable housing provider, Torus. Works are being completed by contractor, Anwyl and are due to be finished later this year.
