Join workshop to redesign Bebington streets
Bebington residents are invited to join design workshops to help create their vision of safer, healthier and more attractive streets in the area. The events are part of the By Ours Bebington community project, led by Sustrans with Wirral Council.
Urban designers will work with participants to look at how they can tackle local issues and design a new-look neighbourhood that feels safer and healthier for all ages and abilities.
Everyone in the one square mile area between Town Lane, Heath Road and Mayer Park, is invited to contribute to one of eight design workshops.
The workshops are part of a three-stage design process for people to help create streets that work for the whole community. The first stage was a recent survey which gathered views from 825 people to find out what people like and dislike about their streets, and what they want to change.
The top issues people highlighted were litter and street cleanliness, traffic safety for walking and cycling, and that Bebington is not a pleasant place to cycle in. Residents requested more plants and greenery, as well as benches and places to sit and rest. Respondents also said less pavement parking, slower traffic and safer crossings would all improve their streets.
The second stage of the By Ours project are the design workshops. These are held on the following dates:
Thursday 1st December 2022
1,30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm

In the last stage of the design process the final designs, which have been approved by local people, will be showcased at a street event in Bebington.
Lou Henderson, By Ours Bebington project officer says: “Please come to one of our free design events. We’ve heard that people are keen to tackle litter and traffic safety in Bebington, and to have more greenery and places to sit.
“Now is your chance to tell us what you think would work best in your local area.”
Councillor Liz Grey, chair of Wirral Council's Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee said: "Encouraging people to make healthier and more active choices when travelling, especially shorter distances, is not only good for them but the environment. By allowing local people to be involved in shaping where they live this project will make the area easier and safer. Hopefully more people will leave their car and choose a more active way to get around their neighbourhoods more often."
By Ours works with residents, businesses and schools to improve local streets. The whole community comes together to design a vibrant neighbourhood with cleaner air, where more people walk to shops and services, stop and chat to each other, and children can play out.
Sustrans has already been working with local school children at primary and secondary schools in Bebington, to gather their views on what they like and dislike about their streets.
By Ours is a partnership project with Sustrans, Wirral Council and Liverpool City Region, funded by the Freshfield Foundation.
It is one of three new community engagement projects in Liverpool City Region that are helping local people take action to deliver safer, healthier streets for everyone.
