VIDEO: Short film showcases New Brighton's hidden gems

A new video promoting one of New Brighton’s key attractions aims to remind locals and tourists alike about the hidden gems of the resort on our doorstep.

The film features the New Brighton Mermaid Trail and its release has been timed to coincide with schools breaking up for the summer holidays.

The short film was produced for no charge, by Wirral based film production company ImagePlay which has worked on a number of projects with New Brighton Coastal Community Team (NBCCT).

Tony Jones, Chair of New Brighton Coastal Community Team, said: “Although busy throughout the year, summer is a key time for New Brighton, when people can enjoy the many attractions and take advantage of the beaches, promenades and open spaces.

“We hope this video will remind locals and tourists alike that you don’t have to travel far to have a great day out.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Nick Murphy of ImagePlay for his work on this wonderful video.”

The Mermaid Trail itself took its inspiration from ‘The Black Rock Mermaid’, who was said to have appeared to a local sailor in New Brighton in the 18th century.

The trail was designed to show visitors parts of New Brighton they might not otherwise visit and highlight some of the attractions and unique character that can be found away from the traditional tourist locations, such as ‘The Old Town’ in Victoria Road and Parade which is home to a number of small independent traders.

The new short film is narrated by Cathy Roberts of Literally A Bookshop, who also produced the tale of the Black Rock Mermaid which can be read in stages next to each of the mermaids that form the trail.

A special guide to the trail, featuring a custom-made illustrated map by local artist Anita Cunningham of Fat Cat Illustration, is available from local shops and businesses across the seaside town.

Earlier this year merchandise inspired by New Brighton's celebrated Mermaid Trail was launched, including notepads, pencils, tote bags and children’s t-shirts. All items are being sold through the Floral Pavilion Theatre.

ImagePlay have made a number of other films promoting Wirral and its history, and are heavily involved in promoting Wirral businesses.

Company director Nick Murphy said: “It’s been a great opportunity producing this video and I hope it helps inspire even more people to come and enjoy everything New Brighton has to offer."
