Statement from Paul Boyce, corporate director for children’s services:
The Government has announced that all schools in England will close on Friday until further notice.
This will clearly have significant implications for pupils, parents and school staff in Wirral and we will be working as hard as we can to make sure this has the least impact on our children’s education.
The Government has said:
- Schools should continue to look after children of key workers. The Cabinet Office will provide further details about what constitutes “key workers”
- Schools should continue to look after children with a HCP plan
- Children due to sit crucial exams will get the qualifications they need
- Meals will be provided for children who need them and the Government will put in place a national voucher system for children eligible for free school meals
We expect the Government will be making more information available. However, it is clear that this is going to have wider implications across our communities and there is much still to be worked out. We will be looking at how we can best implement this announcement over the coming days and weeks, and I will now be in direct contact with schools to try to answer any questions they have as we move forward.
These are testing times for all of us, and we have never faced a situation like this before. We’re lucky in that that we have fantastic schools and Head Teachers in Wirral.
