Our young people build the library of the future

Children from Wirral Libraries' Lego Clubs took part in the 'Build the library of the Future' competition as part of National Libraries Week (7-12 October) - with some innovative and impressive designs submitted!

Ran by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), the national competition invites young people to get creative with Lego to show how they think libraries could look in 2020 and beyond.

In addition, Friends' groups at Birkenhead Central and West Kirby Libraries each sponsored their own competition - with the prize of a £20 Lego voucher on-offer.

Wirral's Lego Clubs are proving to be very popular, and the standard of builds made each week is fantastic. There are currently clubs at Rock Ferry, Birkenhead, Bebington and West Kirby Libraries (details below), and each club is free to attend - children simply turn up and build! Some clubs have themes for each session while others are free build, plus there are Lego idea books available for anyone who would like a little inspiration.

Lego is a fantastic way to be creative either in groups or individually, as well as being great for concentration and making friends.

For the national competition, entries from each Lego club were tweeted on Saturday 5th October via the Wirral Libraries Twitter account, and a winner was selected for each local library competition. Birkenhead Library's winner Adam is pictured here with his 'Raise the Roof' build, which has a roof that lifts up via cog wheels, as well as lots more happening inside.

Also as part of National Libraries Week, Wirral Libraries held an e-library session in the Pyramids Shopping centre to showcase what's on offer for residents, including e-books, e-audio and e-magazines - all available for free with a Wirral library card. For the little ones, families enjoyed an Under 5s morning at Birkenhead Central Library, with a special appearance from Peppa Pig!
