Important information about council services over Christmas

Wirral Council has released details of Christmas opening hours for key services.

As in previous years, council staff have to take four days of unpaid leave every year as part of budget saving measures. Taking the majority of these days at Christmas allows a number of council buildings to be closed, making savings of more than £1 million.

Some council services won’t be available between Christmas and New Year.  Many services can still be requested through the council website, but will not receive attention until services resume on 2nd January 2019.

Libraries/One Stop Shops

Libraries are open as normal up to and including Saturday 22nd December, except Leasowe Library which will close at 5pm on Friday 21 December.  One Stop Shops are closed from 5pm on December 21st. Both reopen as normal from 2nd January.

Leisure centres

  • Open up to and including Sunday 23rd December
  • Closed from Monday 24th to Friday 28th December
  • Open on Saturday 29th – Sunday 30th December (time restrictions may apply)
  • Closed on Monday 31st and Tuesday 1st January
  • Re-open for business as usual on Wednesday 2nd January

Our dedicated Leisure Call Centre team will be available on 0151 606 2010 during Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th December for bookings and customer enquiries. Customers can continue to book for available classes and courts online or via our downloadable App (usual subscription restrictions apply).

Council Tax, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support

The council’s general telephone services, including Council Tax and benefits support, will be closed from 5pm on Friday 21st December, reopening on Wednesday 2nd January.

Homelessness and housing

The Housing Options Team will be operating an emergency service only from 5pm on Friday 21st December until 9am on Wednesday 2nd January.  The offices will be closed during this time and completed referrals will not be actioned until the 2nd January 2019.

In an emergency situation, where the service user has nowhere safe to stay that night, please complete the referral form and contact Wirral Council’s Emergency Duty Team on 0151 677 6557 for further assistance.  Normal service provision will resume on the 2nd January 2019.

Waste collections

If your grey or green bin would be collected on Tuesday 25th December, put it out on Saturday 22nd December. If your bin would be collected on Wednesday 26th December, put it out on Sunday 23rd December.

If your bin is due for collection on Tuesday 1st January, please put it out for collection on Saturday 29th December. On all days, please make sure your bin is out by 7am on the morning of scheduled collection.

There will be no bulky collections available between Christmas Day and 2nd January, while there is a break in the garden waste collection service between 18th December and 14th January, as per the terms and conditions of the service.
