With many people dreaming of a white Christmas, if temperatures do drop, our gritting team are on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the winter months, ready to respond when temperatures – or the forecast – demand it.
So whilst you are tucked up in bed awaiting the arrival of Father Christmas, sitting down for your Christmas dinner, or bursting out a chorus of Auld Lang Syne on New Year’s Eve, our team will be monitoring the weather forecast and road conditions. When it's required, they'll be out gritting to make sure you can keep moving.
We stockpile 3,500 tonnes of salt at the start of winter, which puts us in a very strong position for dealing with the worst of the weather.
When a decision to grit is made, the aim is to have the first gritter on the road within an hour. But we’d just like to remind people that even on gritted roads they should drive more slowly and to the conditions of the road.
