Free dementia awareness training is to be provided for people living anywhere across the Wallasey constituency area in the coming months.
Working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society, the council’s Wallasey Constituency Team has lined up a series of training sessions during October, November and December.
The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.
This skills-based course will enable those taking part to be more confident in supporting people with dementia, many of whom face barriers, including loss of confidence that can affect their ability to do simple tasks. They can worry about becoming confused or about leaving a shop without paying.
The three hour introductory skills-based session will help to give an understanding of the unique ways that dementia affects people and how it can impact on everyday life. It also includes positive ways of helping and dealing with people with dementia.
Dementia Friends is about learning the many small ways other people can help. From telling others about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting a friend or acquaintance living with dementia – every action counts.
There is also the option of becoming a Dementia Friends Champion. There are more than 10,000 volunteer Dementia Friends Champions encouraging people to learn a little bit more about dementia. Champions are trained and supported by the Alzheimer’s Society’s to run information sessions in their community and help inspire others to help those living with dementia live well.
