Wirral’s new Emergency Food Hub, a partnership between Wirral Council and community food providers, has launched an online facility to provide a single point of contact for residents to report they need urgent help to get food.
There are many reasons why people will be struggling to get food because of the coronavirus situation - whether it’s because they are vulnerable or at risk, because they are self-isolating with symptoms, or because they do not have the means to get the shopping they need.
Residents who are in need of emergency food, for whatever reason, should visit www.wirral.gov.uk/foodhelp and provide their details via the short online form.
Anyone who is unable to go online, or has problems completing the form, is asked to call the Wirral Coronavirus Helpline on 0151 666 5050 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm). This number will transfer to an emergency control room at weekends for people needing crisis food supply.
Feeding Birkenhead - Supporting Wirral, Wirral Foodbank and other community food providers are working together to respond to requests for help at the Council-led Emergency Food Hub, where food hampers are put together and dispatched to people in need across the borough.
The Leader of Wirral Council, Councillor Pat Hackett, said: “Last week we launched the Wirral Infobank online resource and came together with community food providers to coordinate our efforts at Wirral’s new Emergency Food Hub.
“Today we have set out a new, quick and easy way for people to tell us they need urgent help in getting food, which will help ensure that nobody goes hungry because of the coronavirus situation.”
As the need for food support has increased and donations and supplies have been disrupted, Wirral Foodbank is encouraging shoppers who can spare a few additional items to make a donation at one of their collection points at supermarkets across Wirral. Full details of how you can support Wirral Foodbank are available on their website.
Any businesses wishing to donate bulk supplies should contact Wirral Chamber on tel. 0151 650 6982 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
