A local care leaver has won the Liverpool City Region Apprentice of the Year award for Wirral.
An apprentice with the Contessa Group, which owns the Leverhulme and Hillbark Hotels in Wirral, Laura Lovelady flies the flag for budding professionals across the region.
The Liverpool City Region awards celebrate local apprenticeships, recognising the best apprentices and apprentice employers.
Laura and the other winners received their awards from Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of Liverpool City Region, during a ceremony in June.
Having left school, like many of her peers unsure of a career path, Laura was enrolled on the Get Real Programme, Wirral Council’s flagship Employability scheme aimed at supporting care leavers and looked after children into education, employment or training.
Following this, she completed a four-week Internship at Contessa’s Leverhulme Hotel and Spa which led to a 12 month opportunity to stay at Contessa thanks to the ESF-funded Intermediate Labour Market initiative.
During the course Laura went from strength to strength, working hard to make excellent progress. After the 12 months was up, Contessa then took Laura on as an apprentice, supported by Wirral Council’s 14-19 team and the Wirral Apprentice Programme, which encourages local business to invest in apprentices.
Laura said: ‘I feel I have done myself proud and the hard work has paid off! The apprenticeship has helped me to achieve a lot of my life goals and I am so grateful I had this opportunity and the support of my team at the hotel to help me get where I am today.’
