Works on the A41 corridor between Port Sunlight and Birkenhead are set to be complete by March 2020 after works returned to the A41 bypass on 6 January to complete the project.
The £3.4million scheme, jointly funded by Liverpool City Region (LCR) Combined Authority and Wirral Council, saw work commence in September 2019 and after a short break, 9 December 2019 to 6 January 2020, that provided full access to residents during the Christmas period, work will continue this year.
Cllr McManus Wirral Council’s cabinet member for Community Services states: “With this corridor being such a key route within the borough, I am pleased that the work on this project is near completion and residents had access to it over Christmas, for easier journeys to see friends and relatives over the festive period.”
This project carried out by A E Yates and Amey Consulting, forms part of the investment into maintaining our highways and works this year will see lane restrictions on the A41 bypass to complete the installation of the remaining 75 streetlight columns, 500m of safety fencing and 50 road traffic signs.
Throughout the works so far, 9.4km of road has been resurfaced, almost 50 streetlight columns installed, 5.5km of safety fencing and 8km of cabling and ducting installed as well as improvements to bridge deck waterproofing and jointing.

By carrying out the works, the A41 will have an improved flow on the highway, provide more reliable journey times, reduced carbon emissions and have further road safety benefits. AE Yates have also committed to providing social value within this project, with about 60% already delivered.
Cllr Julie McManus continues: “I am delighted with the progress on this project. By investing in this A41 corridor, residents and commuters will see many benefits to their journeys using this route.
“I am very proud that this scheme will also deliver initiatives that employ local people, provide apprenticeships, increase spend through local businesses and improve local community greenspaces via the suppliers commitment to £90,000 worth of additional Social Value as part of the Council’s award winning programme.”
New Chester Road, Campbeltown Road roundabout, Green Lane and Mollington Link roundabout, Town Link viaduct and the A41 bypass have all received works within the scheme and the final improvements started on the A41 bypass on Monday 6 January 2020.
