A41 to receive £3.4 million improvements

The A41, a key network route for the borough, will see improvements made to both its North and Southbound routes over the coming months.

The improvements come following independent condition surveys in addition to reports from highways inspectors, councillors and members of the public. These condition surveys enable underlying problems to be identified and fixed in schemes like this.

During this scheme, in which £3.4 million will be invested, work will primarily involve the resurfacing of 9.4km of road, improvements to 198 streetlights, bridge deck waterproofing and jointing and upgrading to 4.3km of safety fencing.

These works carried out by A E Yates, form part of the investment into maintaining our highway assets. By carrying out these works, the A41 will create an improved flow on the highway to provide more reliable journey times and reduced carbon emissions. Maintaining our roads will also have further road safety benefits.

Cllr Julie McManus, Cabinet Member for Community Services comments: “These improvement works will have a big impact on all residents as the A41 is such an important route for many of our residents on their commute and as they travel around the borough.

By investing in this route, we will allow residents and commuters to continue using the A41 both safely and efficiently.”

The first stage of these works began on Monday 2 September and will continue until Friday 6 September.

Work began with single lane closures of the A41 Northbound from Bolton Road Roundabout, to enable road crossing works to be carried out. This closure was in place between Monday 2 September until Thursday 5 September, during the hours of 9:30am to 3:30pm.

These single lane closures were scheduled to avoid peak times to minimise disruption to both residents and commuters.

Cllr McManus continued: “While this key route undergoes improvements, works have been scheduled to try and reduce inconvenience. I would like to encourage all residents to continue allowing extra time for any journeys and to utilise the diversion routes where necessary.”

Full closures have only been taking place during the night. Southbound A41, from Campbeltown Road Roundabout, was the first of these full closures in order to enable the resurfacing works to commence. These closures started on Tuesday 3 September at 7:00pm till 6:00am and Wednesday 4 September at 7:00pm to 6:00am.

The following full closure of A41 Northbound, from Bolton Road Roundabout, also be for resurfacing works, takes place on Thursday 5 September and Friday 6 September between 7:00pm and 6:00am.

Diversion routes will be displayed throughout the progress of the works.
