Major plans to revamp Birkenhead’s Woodside waterfront area and improve its connection to the town centre are being put forward for the public to have their say.

The focus is on the area from the Argyle Street/Conway Street roundabout running through Hamilton Square and down to the Woodside Ferry Terminal.

The project, called ‘Birkenhead Waterfront and Surrounds’ includes three key areas: Argyle Street, Hamilton Square and Hamilton Square Station Plaza, and Woodside and the waterfront.

Part of the proposals is to improve the connection for pedestrians coming from Hamilton Square Station, to make this area more of a destination by creating space for a riverside park and new landscaping to frame views to the River Mersey. The park space would re-imagine the area currently used for buses and could include a wide range of activities and make it an attractive location for visitors stepping off the Ferry.

The aim of this large scale £22.65million infrastructure investment is to make the whole area easier to access for pedestrians and cyclists, create more attractive spaces with better landscaping, strengthen the links between Birkenhead town centre and the waterfront and to kick start the delivery of a new neighbourhood in this unique world class location for new and existing communities to live, work and socialise.

Cllr Tony Jones, chair of Wirral Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee, said:

Birkenhead waterfront is one of the most impressive locations with stunning views and the historic ferry among its attractions.

We want to really get the most out of incredible places such as Woodside and Hamilton Square areas, make them link better to the town centre through important routes like Argyle Street and be places people want to visit and enjoy. To help us achieve this we are really keen that the people of Wirral get involved in this consultation and tell us your views and ideas.

This project is also part of the broad programme of regeneration activities in Birkenhead that sits within the 2040 Framework and ties in with the wider regeneration ambitions for the Left Bank of Wirral which stretches along the Mersey from Bromborough to New Brighton via Birkenhead, Wirral Waters, Seacombe and Liscard.

To take part in the online consultation visit the council’s HaveYourSay website until March 26.

It is also possible to visit in person to share views on this and other projects taking place in Birkenhead via the council’s pop-up shop BirkenEd’s Place at 8-10 Borough Pavement, Grange Precinct, Birkenhead CH41 2XX. You can find out more about BirkenEd’s Place from the website www.birkeneds.place

The funding for this project has been secured by Wirral Council and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority through the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund and Town Deal and is separate to the funding secured for Merseytravel to deliver a revamped Ferry Pontoon and Big Heritage who are in the process of designing and delivering a new Battle of The Atlantic attraction both of which also sit in the Woodside area.
