As tens of thousands of golf fans flock to Wirral this summer for the return of The Open Golf Championship local businesses are being encouraged to make the most of the influx of visitors.

To help with this a dedicated Business Toolkit has been developed and can be downloaded from the council’s website.

The return of The Open again puts Wirral in the international spotlight as one of the most watched sporting events across the world takes place within the borough.

Each time the tournament visits Wirral it attracts thousands of visitors and local businesses can benefit if they prepare by thinking about ways to promote their services to those coming to the borough.

The toolkit provides tips and information to help businesses make the most of the event and give a warm welcome to all those who attend.

It also includes information about the event and some of the preparations that have been made so far, including transport, parking, and accommodation to help business plan.

Ahead of the main competition the formal ticketed practice days of The Open take place on 16 to 19 July and most visitors are expected to start to arrive from Saturday 15 July. The busiest days will be the Championship days which are 20 to 23 July.

The toolkit has suggestions for how local businesses can maximise the benefits of the event, from advice on licensing, promotion and how to reach out to golf fans, to branding and a range of other useful tips.

Businesses also need to be ready for temporary changes put in place to accommodate The Open. Over the coming weeks we will be letting people know about some of the things which will need to be put in place as well as the work that will be done to minimise the impact as far as possible for local people and businesses.

This information will be available through the council website and social media but people can also sign up for the new Wirral Hosts The Open resident email to keep up to date with the latest information about the event.

Residents and business managers can also drop-in to the Council’s Open Championship information office in the former clubhouse of Hoylake Municipal Golf Course to view the plans and ask any questions they may have. Office opening times and other information is posted on the Council website at www.wirral.gov.uk/local-information-about-open

The council website will also be updated regularly with information about The Open and how it affects local people and businesses.

Wirral Council, in partnership with Wirral Chamber, offer free advice and guidance through the Business Support Service. Email info@wirralchamber.co.uk to discuss a range of support that can help your business get ready for The Open.
