Licensed paragliding and model aircraft flying can now resume in Wirral as lockdown rules continue to ease nationally.
Residents enjoying the borough’s parks and open spaces should be aware of the activities and where they may be taking place.
Model aircraft flying by the Wirral Radio Control Flying Society can start again from Wednesday 24 June at Arrowe Country Park and paragliding by North Wales Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club (NWHGPGC) can resume from Saturday 27 June at Wirral Country Park in Thurstaston.
Only authorised model aircraft clubs and paragliders can utilise Wirral’s open spaces.
In terms of coronavirus relate safety, measures have been put in place to ensure all activity is in line with Government advice and is being reinforced by the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) and British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA).
Cllr Julie McManus, Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “I’m pleased that a number of residents will be able to resume activities and hobbies such as Paragliding and Model Aircraft Flying – it’s also important to remember that we all still need to take care and be considerate of others.
“Whether you are visiting Arrowe Country Park or Wirral Country Park, please take care when activities are going on, maintain a safe distance and avoid busy areas.”
Clubs have and will continue to be communicated with to ensure that anyone participating in these activities are doing so safely.
As per the Licence Agreement, no aircraft can fly unless the licensee registers the aircraft with the British Model Flying Association.
The NWHGPGC also have specific club rules for paragliding at Wirral Country Park that can be found online to ensure the activity is considerate of other park users.
Paragliding will only be permitted for NWHGPGC members, at the approved launch point at Wirral Country Park, Thurstaston, under the club’s existing agreement with Wirral Council.
Please be aware that with travel restrictions in Wales still being in place, Wirral Country Parks’s launch point is only available to members of the NWHGPGC, based in England.
