New NHS COVID-19 app launched

The new NHS COVID-19 smartphone app has launched today.

One of the key features of the app is ‘venue check-in’, which is a simple, electronic way for visitors to hospitality venues, attractions, close contact businesses and other public buildings to log their attendance for ‘Test and Trace’ purposes.

It also links people to localised updates, the latest guidance and allows people to get advice and signposting if they show any symptoms of COVID-19.

To be at its most effective the app needs to be downloaded and used by as many people as possible.

Hospitality, close contact services and leisure venues are already legally required to log details of customers, visitors and staff for NHS Test and Trace.  From today, Thursday 24th September, these venues will also be legally required to display official NHS QR code posters at the entrance to their premises, which can be scanned in seconds using the new app.

It is free to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The government's website contains more details about the app, including how people's privacy and data is being protected.
