A major campaign to help local businesses during the lockdown starts next week, Monday November 9.
The focus is on supporting Wirral’s high streets and reminding people across the borough of the vital role they play in our lives.
The High Street Heroes Week campaign will focus on the #ShopSafeShopLocal message. It will urge people in Wirral to support the shops that are able to stay open and buy from the businesses who have had to close their doors but are trading in other ways, to help maximise the pounds spent locally.
It follows the request by Wirral Council for people to nominate their “high street heroes” which saw hundreds of people voting for scores of shops across the borough. In total almost 500 nominations were submitted for more than 100 businesses, ranging from greengrocers and butchers, to a bike shop, pet shop and a hairdresser.
17 of these businesses are now signed up to be the faces of the latest campaign, highlighting how local companies went above and beyond during the first lockdown, and their importance to their communities. Shoppers will also be encouraged to choose local businesses which have had to close during this latest lockdown but continue to offer click and collect, home delivery and online shopping.
Cllr Anita Leech, chair of Wirral Council’s Economy, Regeneration and Development Committee, said: “We know the latest national lockdown has again forced many shops and businesses to close and this is incredibly difficult for everyone affected. This campaign is about supporting every local business and focussing on encouraging local money to be spent locally.
“Business which can stay open have played a vital role. This campaign recognises the extraordinary efforts of Wirral’s businesses in these challenging times and how they bend over backwards to support their local communities. During the first lockdown in March, many adapted their business to make sure their customers didn’t go without, and I have no doubt they will be stepping up again. We ask the public to recognise their efforts and support them by shopping locally wherever possible.
“Wirral’s businesses have proved they are at the heart of the communities they serve, and now the public can return the favour and support businesses, such as by buying via home deliveries or click and collect. I urge everyone to shop safe and shop local.”
