Nominations invited for a Wirral Award 2023
Nominations are being invited for the Wirral Award 2023.
The award confers civic recognition for an outstanding achievement in the previous 12 months, or for providing a distinguished service to the borough over a long period, which is usually 20 years or more.
It can be granted to individuals and organisations and previous recipients include individuals who freely gave up their time to work in their communities, including RNLI volunteers, long-standing foster carers, and sports and youth group volunteers.
The Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Jerry Williams, said:
Thousands of local people give up their time, or go the extra mile, every single day to make life better for others. The Wirral Award is fantastic way to shine a light on some of them and for the Council, on behalf of the whole community, to say thank you for the amazing things they do.
All nominations will be considered by a small panel comprising of the Mayor and a small number of other Councillors. Their recommendations will then be submitted to the Council’s Regulatory and General Purposes Committee for approval.
The winners of the award for 2022 were:
- Christine Allen for voluntary work, including with Birkenhead Forum Housing Association, as a Justice of the Peace at Birkenhead Court, with the Life Expectancy Wirral project and at Make It Happen.
- Alan Chape for chairing Conservation Areas Wirral since the group was formed a decade ago, for helping Council officers draft the conservation aspects of the new local plan, and for organising the Secret Gardens of Oxton.
- Rev. Jeff Hughes, Rev. Jeff Staples and Canon Philip Moor VG for providing support to the local community following the terrible events that took place in Wallasey Village on Christmas Eve.
- Peter Jenkins for his work voluntary work as a driving force behind Wirral Archaeology and giving all of his free time to heritage projects.
- Bernadette King for providing services to disadvantaged and vulnerable children and adults as chief executive of WEB Merseyside.
- Alan McKeon for his hard work as a local Community Police Inspector, which includes supporting various community events, including Woodlands Park Weekend, a borough-wide youth football event, homeless awareness days, and a community tidy-up.
- Mark McNally for his work as Chair, President and Treasurer of the historic Birkenhead Park Rugby Club and for turning the club around to once again become a thriving hub of the local community.
- Diana Tuohy for making the Delamere Centre a real hub for the residents of Eastham and developing a key role for the centre during the pandemic.
- Lindsey Whitley for setting-up Wirral Wombles, a group that litter picks the highways and byways, pavements, parks and coastlines across our borough.
