Nine libraries to shut their doors this month
In late October 2022, nine of Wirral’s libraries will close their doors.
These are Hoylake, Irby, Pensby, Prenton, Wallasey Village, Woodchurch, Higher Bebington, Bromborough and New Ferry libraries. These particular closures follow wider consultation and were part of the council’s budget setting process in February 2022.
While the doors to the nine libraries will close, a number of community and not-for-profit organisations have shown an interest in taking some of the library sites over. These organisations have submitted a business case to the council to show how they would take over and run the sites as community assets.
These business cases are currently being assessed and councillors will vote to decide if they are progressed at a meeting of the Tourism, Communities, Culture and Leisure Committee on 26th October 2022.
A full library service remains in place, and libraries remain open in Bebington Central, Beechwood, Birkenhead Central, Eastham, Greasby, Heswall, Leasowe, Moreton, Rock Ferry, Seacombe, St James, Upton, Wallasey Central, and West Kirby.
The dates the libraries close are:
• 25th October – Higher Bebington,
• 28th October – Wallasey Village, Pensby, Woodchurch
• 29th October - Prenton
• 31st October – Bromborough, Hoylake, Irby
• New Ferry is currently closed
