A day in the life of a Wirral Ranger

What better way to mark #LoveParksWeek than to recognise our fantastic Rangers and volunteers, who help maintain and improve the wonderful green spaces we have in Wirral? 

Ahead of World Ranger Day on Sunday 31 July, we met up with Matt, who talked us through a day in his life as a  Wirral  Ranger. His day included checking moth-traps on the meadows at  Wirral  Country Park to measure biodiversity and a trip to  Hilbre Island where he worked with students to collect data about seaweed. He also teamed up with the Friends of Hilbre volunteer group to help fix fences and remove invasive plants.

Matt said: “We’re very lucky on the Wirral to have access to such amazing parks and it’s a real privilege to work in them. Wherever you are on Wirral, you’re never far from a fantastic park, stretch of coastline or amazing bit of countryside, so get out and about!”

The hard work and dedication of Rangers like Matt and the fantastic support from the 60 friends and volunteer groups on Wirral recently led to the borough being awarded 33 Green Flag Awards.

Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of  Wirral Council’s Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said: “These awards are a recognition of the many hours of work put in at these sites by both staff and Wirral’s invaluable volunteers so that we can all continue to enjoy so many fantastic open spaces right across the borough.
