Parents with children under a year old will be able pick up a free pack filled with a host of reading goodies from national bookgifting programme, Bookstart, at Pyramids Shopping Centre tomorrow.
On Friday 1 December from 10.30am to 2pm, Wirral Libraries will be located outside Next speaking with parents and caregivers about the benefits of getting into the habit of sharing stories, books and rhymes with their little ones on a daily basis.
Derek Millar, centre director at Pyramids, said it was a pleasure to be welcoming the organisation once again. He commented: “Bookstart is a brilliant initiative and we have supported the cause on a number of occasions and each time has proved extremely popular with our shoppers.
“I’d encourage people to come down and collect their free packs and have a chat with the team as they have a lot of great information to share.”
2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Bookstart, which provides free books to all children in England and Wales at two key ages before school to help families read together every day.
Diane Mitchell, strategic librarian at Birkenhead Central Library, said: “We’ll be handing out packs which include two board books, a rhyme sheet and a booklet of tips and ideas for sharing books with children from a very young age.
“Reading is a really great bonding experience for parents and babies. Over time even when they’re very little, children can recognise word patterns and rhyming sounds, and brightly coloured pictures are always engaging and fun,” Diane said. “We’re looking forward to being at Pyramids again and meeting lots of people.”
