WIRRAL’S Mersey waterfront has a major role in this year’s Mersey River Festival in partnership with Liverpool ONE, on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 & 25.
The focus of the festival is usually the Liverpool waterfront, but this year, events and activities are also planned for Woodside in Birkenhead, and at New Brighton.
Further events are being added all the time, but Saturday will feature a number of aeronautical displays above the river to mark Armed Forces Day, sponsored by local shipbuilders, Cammell Laird . It’s also hoped that Wirral will welcome a number of tall ships, military and research vessels.
Woodside should prove a good vantage point on Saturday, June 24, for The Thundercats display team, (from 11am-1pm), Red Arrows salute (opposite Liverpool Cruise Terminal at 11.45am), and the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (4pm over the river). Sunday afternoon features the Yakolevs Aerobatics Display team.
There will be costumed performers, balloon artists, pirates and lots of other events, stalls and attractions along the promenade between Woodside and New Brighton – see Mersey River Festival's website for more events as they are added.
John Syvret, CBE, Cammell Laird CEO said: “I had no hesitation in taking on the lead sponsor role to support the holding of the 2017 National Armed Forces Day event here on Merseyside. As a Birkenhead business it is brilliant to see Wirral playing a leading role in Armed Forces Day and the Mersey River Festival reflecting the great passion local people have for maritime. "I am certain all the communities of Merseyside will turn out in their thousands to provide their support, and that our great city and region will provide a magnificent venue and spectacle for the nation.”
